  • Year One Loves George Eliot!

Tue 22 Nov 2016 Miss Turner

Over the past two weeks the year one children have been learning about the local famous author George Eliot also known as Mary Ann Evans.

Their topic started with a visit from John and Viv from The George Eliot fellowship. John gave the children lots of information about the author as well as sharing pictures. He discussed the book ‘The Mill on the Floss’ that Mary had written which was based on the younger life of Mary and her brother. Viv came dressed as George Eliot wearing a replica dress of the one that she is wearing on the statue in town. Viv answered the children’s questions in role and the children very much enjoyed learning what Mary used to do when she was a little girl.

The second week saw all three classes venture on a Stagecoach bus to the museum and art gallery. The children got to dress up in Victorian clothing and looked at different items from the George Eliot era. They learnt a little more about Mary’s life and had the chance to ask some questions.

From all of this the children have created some lovely work which can be seen on displays in the classroom.

Santa is coming to the Fayreno

FoW are delighted to announce that Santa Claus is coming to the Christmas fayre at school on the 2nd December. Tickets to visit him in his magical winter wonderland will be available on the day giving you a fantastic opportunity to tell him exactly what you are hoping to find under the Christmas tree. (and you might just get a little something to take home on the day too!)

The fayre will be jam packed, as ever, with the traditional favourites alongside some new fun activities for young and old. There will be tombola’s, face painting, sweets, games, refreshments and much more – what a great way to get in to the festive spirit!

The fayre starts at 3:30 in the school hall. Please queue outside the office. Visits to Santa are limited so head over to grab your ticket on arrival.

We will be holding a raffle too, so if you have anything we can add to the prize list please let one of the FoW team know or pass a note through the office.

    Christmas wishes

  • Super SPAR!

Tue 08 Nov 2016 Miss Turner

This week Year 1 children have been on the ‘Whitestone Walk’. They had great fun completing a noticing quiz which helped them identify trees, different buildings and allowed them to apply their maths skills.

On their journey they stopped off at Whitestone Spar and had the real life experience  of paying for a chosen treat, some children receiving change. Whitestone Spar were also kind enough to give all of the children a free bag of fruit and bottle of water to promote healthy eating.

Whilst waiting the children had time to complete a traffic survey and were able to compare which types of transport were used the most and least.

This experience has been so enriching for the children and it has gone on to produce some great writing!

  • Celebrating Diwali

Thu 03 Nov 2016 Reception Teachers

As part of our autumn topic we celebrated Diwali.  We all dressed up in bright colours with adults being taught how to dress in a sari. The children were very excited to be able to come to school in brightly coloured clothes. They completed a huge range of activities throughout the day including learning to do stick dancing, playing instruments to a Diwali song, making diva lamps, drawing and painting rangoli and mendhi patterns. Our fun will continue this week with tasting nan breads and poppadoms with mango chutney!

  • Autumn Fun

Thu 03 Nov 2016 Mrs Hyde

Reception  had an exciting morning discovering the beauty of Autumn when they visited Hartshill Hayes Country Park.

The children travelled by coach which in itself was an exciting experience for them! Once we arrived at the park we set off for a long walk. Armed with bags the children collected lots of leaves noticing and naming the colours as they went. They were very keen to run through the wood with their ‘Autumn’ checklist ticking off what they had spotted.

We looked for squirrels and were lucky to spot two foraging in the leaves. The children discovered two dens made of sticks and enjoyed hiding inside and discussing how to make one.

When we arrived back at school the children painted pictures, sorted leaves and following a class discussion demonstrated their knowledge and understanding of the change in seasons.
