Phonics
At Whitestone Infant school the pupils follow the ‘Read Write Inc' programme. This requires attention to the teaching of letter recognition and sounds, blending these to read and write words, with increasing fluency and understanding.
Teachers and teaching assistants have been trained to deliver the Read, Write Inc Phonics programme.
The children work at the level appropriate to them and in groups. Children are assessed every half-term to move groups, or they may need some support to reach the next stage, we have a Reading Leader and designated intervention staff.
Every day, your child will bring something home to read. This will vary depending on which RWI level they are currently reading. They might bring home red and green words, or a RWI book they have already read at school so they can build their confidence or a storybag book, which is a RWI book at the same level but not previously read at school. Alternatively, they might bring a book of their own choice or a book given by their teacher that is not a RWI book but at around the same level as the ones they are reading in lessons. Some books have a 'shared' sticker on and are for the child to share the reading of that book with an adult.
A child needs an adult to help them read, learning the letters and sounds, developing confidence, understanding and enjoyment. This will help your child to become a fluent reader. Please read at least 3x a week and sign their Home Reading diary, please ensure your child has their book in school everyday.
