In order for children to be physically active for 60 minutes a day, we have adopted an active approach to our lunchtimes. Children have lots of exciting activities on offer such as welly walks, skipping, trim trail exploration, parachute games, and sports coach adult-led activities. The children have thoroughly enjoyed their lunchtimes and we have noticed an improvement in their fitness and behaviour! We have also trained some of the Year 2 children to be fantastic playground leaders. They enjoy leading fun lunchtime games and promoting safe play.
The children have a variety of activities on offer each lunchtime and our playground leaders also provide a lunchtime games for our KS1 and Reception children to enjoy daily. Our playground leaders ensure we have a variety of exciting equipment out each day and encourage children to take part in different challenges.
Our fantastic Mid Day Supervisors encourage children to take part in our skipping and hoola hoop challenges. They also encourage children to take part in daily laps to work up to a Daily Mile.
In March, the Universities of Stirling, Edinburgh and Highlands & Islands found that 15 minutes of self-paced exercise, such as The Daily Mile, is beneficial for pupils’ cognition and wellbeing.
We have a sports provider who visits us weekly and provides an additional new activity for the children. The children have really enjoyed learning how to axe-throw with precision as well as learning how to use hurdles just like Olympians! They also support our playground leaders by teaching them how to lead games and activities during lunchtime.
