Fundamental Movement Skills

Fundamental Movement Skills are the basic movements that children develop as they grow and explore the world around them. These include skills such as running, jumping, hopping, balancing, throwing, catching and skipping. They are the building blocks for all future physical activity and help children to become confident, active and healthy individuals.

Developing these skills from an early age is incredibly important. Children who are confident in their movement are more likely to enjoy being active, participate in sport and physical activity, and lead healthy lifestyles as they grow older. Fundamental Movement Skills also support children’s coordination, balance, strength, social development and self-confidence, while helping to improve concentration and overall wellbeing.

At our school, Fundamental Movement Skills are taught explicitly through our Get Set 4 PE scheme within both KS1 and EYFS PE lessons. Through carefully planned activities and progressive learning opportunities, children are supported in developing and refining these essential skills in a fun, engaging and inclusive environment.

In EYFS, children continually develop these skills not only during PE lessons, but also through the wide range of physical opportunities available throughout the school day. Outdoor learning, Forest School sessions and continuous provision all provide valuable opportunities for children to practise movement, build confidence and develop physical independence through active play and exploration.
